About This Course

The pace of tax change in Canada hasn’t slowed. With Budget 2025, the first Spring Economic Update and a summer of draft legislation, practitioners have a long list of new rules to absorb before the 2027 filing season. In this practical and often humorous session, an experienced tax practitioner and educator walks through the changes that matter most for Canadian practices, with a focus on what to check, what to flag, and where the biggest risks lie.

The course starts with the legislative landscape: what has passed, what’s still waiting in committee, rate changes and personal credits, and measures from Budget 2025 and the Spring Economic Update. These include the personal support worker credit, the employee ownership trust exemption, changes to the Home Buyers’ Plan and labour mobility deduction, and the upcoming CPP rate reduction. It then covers the new permanent immediate expensing (“productivity mega deduction”): what qualifies, the excluded vehicle rules, manufacturing and processing buildings and their recapture risk, and what it all means for business sales and purchases.

A major part of the session is devoted to the new dividend suspension rules for tiered corporations. Using worked examples, it covers how dividend refunds can be suspended, the flow-out tests, the 2.6 multiplier, grandparent corporations, trusts in the structure, unaffiliated shareholders, and practical checklists for screening clients. The course also covers bare trust reporting for 2026 (exceptions, practical problems, schedule 15 penalties and engagement letter considerations), the expanded NPO filing requirements, AMT on trusts with investment counselling fees, estate loss carryback rules, rights or things returns, provisional tax implementation, and when CRA decisions can be challenged.
